Presentation 2006
On the occasion of Turin World Book Capital, the thirteenth edition of INCANTI is dedicated to the relationship between Figure Theater and Literature: to the countless ways in which Puppetry approaches, is inspired, makes revive, transforms and plays with Literature. From the very concept of writing to the classics, from the Bible to the children's storie, from the gothic tale to the fantasy novel, guests performances at Incanti's 2006 edition propose a look now ironic and funny, now philosophical and even dramatic on the world of books.
Among the guests of honor there are some returns such as Neville Tranter of Stuffed Puppet Theatre (Netherlands / Australia) who in the 2004 edition had a great success with the Italian premier of his show about the last hours of Hitler in the Berlin bunker. Neville Tranter presents this year his already become historic work Re: Frankenstein. Also a return of Hoichi Okamoto, Dondoro Theatre (Japan), and his sensual puppets, with the show Manji. New entries however, coming from far away are the company Soma International (Canada) with Cabaret Decadanse, fireworks-like and biting variety; Patricia O'Donovan Company Ambulo / Train Theatre (Israel) with Luis or The Child of the Night, about Luis Braille and the invention of writing for the blind people; and yet Duda Paiva (Brazil / Netherlands) with Angel and Valeria Guglietti (Argentina) with his ombromania. Also for the first time in Incanti two personalities of Italian puppetry: Gigio Brunello with Macbeth all'Improvviso (work winner of the 2002 National Theatre Critics' Association Prize) and Walter Broggini with its historical spectacle Solo. Furthermore an important phase at Incanti of the project Beckett & Puppet sponsored by the Theatre of Animation Center of Gorizia, in which besides Incanti, the Istitute per i Beni Marionettistici e il Teatro Popolare and the Company Doctor Bostik of Turin are participating: for the centenary of Samuel Beckett's birth, CTA Gorizia held a competition for the best staging Figure Theatre works from a text by Beckett. Incanti hosts the preview of the final works.
It continues the collaboration between Incanti and the Figuren Theatre Festival of Wels (Austria), which this year presents at Incanti -within the wider project Teatro Figura Europa- Romeo und Julia, a work of three different companies from Austria, Italy and France. It continues also the section of the festival dedicated to animation cinema and video art connected with Puppetry, organized by the V-Art in Cagliari.
Thanks to the City of Grugliasco, the Chalet Allemand of the Cultural Park "Le Serre" became this yearthe seat of the festival section dedicated to children and will host, along with the Theatre of the Castello di Rivoli, the shows for the schools.
The Laboratory of Shadows Theater, taking place since 2000 thanks to the collaboration with the Education Department of the Castello di Rivoli Museum of Contemporary Art, will be dedicated to the hand shadow puppets Ombromania and held by the Argentine artist Valeria Guglietti.
This thirteenth edition of Incanti not only confirms the confidence and support of the Piedmont Region, the City of Turin, the Compagnia di San Paolo, Fondazione CRT and now the City of Grugliasco, which has allowed the international fame of the Festival, but also marks an important milestone: thanks to the City of Turin and the Fondazione Teatro Stabile Torino the Festival this year will move to the new headquarters of Victoria Theatre.
Finally, thanks to the public that follows us, for thirteen years now, and good festival!
